The plasma membrane responds to mechanical stimuli to buffer membrane tension. The mechanical stimuli can also stimulate the shedding of the plasma membrane into the extracellular vesicles. These buffering and shedding should interplay with each other for the cells to adapt to the mechanical stresses. In this symposium, the caveolae as a tension buffer and endocytic apparatus, as well as the cellular protrusions for the extracellular vesicles, will be introduced and discussed.
