A tubular structure is ubiquitously found in animal organs, consisting of cells and a lumen inside, filled with fluid crucial for organ function. While the molecular machinery of lumen formation is well studied, it remains poorly understood about physical mechanisms that underlie lumen structures. This symposium defines lumen development as a self-organizing transformation led by multiple feedbacks between forces and biochemical reactions at the cell-lumen interface. We aim to understand the design principles of luminal systems by discussing studies targeting various tissues.
